This is an amazing time to love fashion. In my opinion there really are no fashion trends anymore -- at least not in the sense as how trends used to be, where you would say "Uggs are in!" and then you would get a stampede of Ugg-wearing fashionistas for a solid 18 to 36 months. With the rise of Instagram and the internet, every thing and every decade is "in," all the time, and what you see as "fashion" is really just people expressing their alignment with various fashion subcultures on any given day. This makes dressing up particularly fun if you're feeling particularly "Working Girl circa 1980" one day, "Paris Hilton holding a Starbucks wearing Juicy Couture" on another day, and "Little House on the Prairie in Batsheva" the next.
However, since LCD is in the business of identifying various fashion subcultures and microtrends for your shopping convenience, I present to you -- my favorite trends from New York Fashion Week, September 2022.
BRAS ARE TOPS TOO
Left to right: Theophilio, Sandy Liang, Priscavera, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Bevza.
Maybe it's due to global warming but I saw bras as tops everywhere on the runways.
VOLUME PLAY
Left to right: Eckhaus Latta, Barragan, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Collina Strada, Peter Do.
This is one of my favorite styling tricks -- pairing contrasting volumes together for a statement look.
CROP TOPS CONTINUE TO REIGN
Left to right: Priscavera, Collina Strada, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Et Ochs, Maryam Nassir Zadeh.
Sorry to say, don't cancel your gym membership?? Crop tops are here to stay.
HAVE AN OPEN...STOMACH
Left to right: Kim Shui, Sandy Liang, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Puppets & Puppets, Elena Velez.
In fact...maybe add in some yoga and other core strengthening exercises to your regimen because exposed stomachs are apparently a thing!
MAXI SKIRTS
Left to right: Luar, Collina Strada, Puppets & Puppets, Peter Do.
Thankfully for those of us who hate the gym, some maximalist dressing is also on the runways this season in the form of gorgeous and dramatic maxi skirts.
OPEN WEAVE KNITWEAR
Left to right: Eckhaus Latta, Lauren Manoogian, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Collina Strada, Puppets & Puppets.
Seeing as it's been one billion degrees, makes sense for knitwear to loosen up a bit, and I loved seeing designers play with crochet and patterned knitwear.
OFFICE (IN)APPROPRIATE!
Left to right: Kenneth Nicholson, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Sandy Liang, Theophilio, Peter Do.
I love suiting. Designers are taking elements of traditional office wear and putting amazing and sexy twists on suiting and I am here. For. It.
MAKE A STATEMENT WITH COATS
Left to right: Lauren Manoogian, Luar, Priscavera, Peter Do, Priscavera.
Nothing makes getting dressed up easier than throwing on an amazing statement coat. Yes yes yes. This is the trick ya'll!
BEING TRANSPARENT
Left to right: Kenneth Nicholson, Sandy Liang, Collina Strada, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, SC103.
I'm really loving how designers continue to play with sheer fabrics and transparency for the Spring. You can make these pieces more "wearable" by layering them or adding a contrasting base garment.
